About Teeth Whitening
Over time teeth can become stained or discoloured as a result of our daily lifestyles. The best way to stay on top of this is with a regular dental programme, including scaling and polishing. However, teeth whitening is also an option for lightening the appearance of your teeth and giving you a sparkling smile.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a treatment where teeth are bleached to make them appear lighter. It won’t make your teeth brilliant white, but it will lighten the existing colour by several shades. Teeth whitening can be done in multiple ways. At Bethcar Dental we recommend a home whitening treatment, which works over a period of time and several uses. We recommend this because it’s more gentle on teeth and achieves better results than single in-clinic appointments.
What is teeth whitening for?
Teeth whitening is an aesthetic treatment designed to improve the appearance of your teeth. We all feel better and more confident when our teeth look their best, and part of that is maintaining a clean, light, even colour tone.
What's involved with getting your teeth whitened?
If you would like to embark on a teeth whitening treatment, we will discuss it with you at your dental appointment and talk you through the process. We recommend a home whitening treatment, for which we will create custom trays (a bit like a mouthguard), that fit your teeth.
You will take these trays home, along with a dedicated tooth whitening gel. The gel goes into the trays before you apply them to your teeth for a set period of time each day after brushing as normal.
The treatment is carried out at regular intervals over a couple of weeks for the whitening process to be complete. You should not eat or drink while the trays are in your mouth and it’s recommended that you avoid food and drink that stain your teeth (smoking, red wine, tea, coffee) for the duration of the treatment process.
What are the drawbacks of teeth whitening?
At Bethcar we work with you to make sure that the teeth whitening process is as safe and gentle for your teeth as possible. However, as it is a bleaching process there are some things to consider when opting for this treatment.
Some treatments can damage teeth
Some teeth whitening treatments are quite aggressive, and can result in tooth sensitivity and damage to tooth enamel and gums. That’s why it’s always important to work with a professional dentist to find the right solution for you. It’s also for this reason that we recommend our home teeth whitening treatment – it’s gentler on teeth and gums and achieves better results as well.
Teeth whitening is not permanent
Teeth whitening can last anywhere from a few months to up to three years depending on the individual and your dental hygiene practices. Some people are more predisposed to staining and yellowing of the teeth than others, however, the results won’t last as long if you smoke or eat and drink substances known to stain teeth like red wine, tea and coffee.
It won’t affect the colour of fillings or crowns
Teeth whitening won’t affect the colour of dental prosthetics including dentures, crowns, fillings or veneers because of the materials they’re made of. If you have a question about the appearance of any of these, we would be happy to discuss it with you.
Results may vary
Everyone’s teeth are different and no one’s natural teeth are pure white. Some people have naturally darker teeth than others. Teeth whitening doesn’t have a standardised result – it will not make your teeth completely white, but it will lighten your natural tooth colour by several shades.
