Sedation & Nervous Patients
Creating positive dental experiences

Know how
Sedation for nervous patients
For lots of people, going to the dentist is a nerve wracking process. Perhaps you have had a bad experience in the past, or maybe you haven’t been to the dentist often and are unfamiliar with what happens. At Bethcar, we want you to have the best experience possible when you visit us. We understand that people can be nervous and are mindful of anxiety. Therefore, in addition to our friendly team, we have sedation options to help make the process easier for you, should you require any treatment.
Treatment Benefits
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is where you are given a sedative pill to take a couple of hours before your appointment to help control fear and anxiety. It puts you into a calm and relaxed mood, so you can have your dental treatment without worrying too much.
Benefits of oral sedation include:

Easy to take
Oral sedation is as simple as taking a pill

No Needles
If you are nervous about injections, oral sedation is an excellent solution

Staying awake
Despite being drowsy, during oral sedation you remain awake and responsive, so you can understand the procedure and interact with your dentist.
Treatment Benefits
IV Sedation
Intravenous sedation is where we use an IV instead of a pill, to direct the sedative straight into the bloodstream. Once again, when we use this you remain awake, but it puts you into a relaxed mood for more intrusive dental procedures.
Benefits of intravenous sedation include:

Fast Acting
IV sedation begins working within minutes meaning no drowsiness on the way to the practice.

Memory Loss
After IV sedation many patients do not remember having treatment at all – particularly good for very nervous patients.

Staying awake
Despite being unaware of treatment, you will be awake meaning faster recovery times after treatment.
Why Choose Us
We Want What’s Best For You
Composite Bonding is a type of dental restoration that has been around for decades but has only recently been recognised by dentists as one of the best forms of cosmetic treatment available.
Composite bonding can be used to address almost any of your cosmetic concerns, but it is also frequently combined with other treatments such as tooth whitening or veneers.
If you’re looking for a dentist who offers composite bonding in your area, then please get in touch today, we are happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do we support nervous patients?
First and foremost, our empathetic and friendly team is mindful about individual anxieties. We like to develop long-term relationships with our patients through our dental hygiene plans, so you know you’re coming into a safe environment where you are familiar with the routines. If you need any dental treatment and you’re nervous, we are also qualified in providing oral and intravenous sedation to help ease the process for you.
Is sedation right for me?
Dental sedation is used to help calm your nerves, because as a profession we do understand that going to the dentist, particularly if it’s for an invasive procedure, can be an anxiety-making experience. If you are nervous about dental procedures, then we will discuss whether conscious sedation is right for you and make a decision together.
It may be right for you if:
You’re extremely nervous
Dental sedation isn’t something that we use all the time – it’s reserved for individuals who are particularly nervous – either in general or before a specific procedure. During your regular dental check-ups we would not tend to use sedation unless it’s entirely necessary, but we will always work with you to make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your visit.
You’re in need of an invasive dental procedure
If you’re having a dental procedure like a filling, tooth extraction, a bridge or a crown, then it’s understandable that you might be nervous. We will always use a local anaesthetic as required in these procedures, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the process. However, if you are generally nervous or feel worried about a particular procedure, then sedation may be a good option to ease your anxiety.
