Treatment Benefits
Benefits Of Preventative Dentistry
Preventative dentistry is all about long-term health and the maintenance of your natural smile. As a result, it helps to protect not only your oral health but your general health and wellbeing, and even your self-confidence.
Benefits include:
Reducing your risk of tooth decay and gum disease
Preventative dentistry, including scaling and polishing of the teeth as well as regular check-ups, helps to reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, which in turn minimises the chances of getting cavities or losing teeth.
Promotes healthy oral hygiene habits
One of the key focuses of preventative dentistry is the development of healthy oral hygiene habits like regular, effective brushing and flossing. By looking after your teeth well every day you support the long-term wellbeing of your teeth and gums.
Early identification of any problems
Even with the best oral hygiene and care, things can occur, whether it’s overcrowding as children’s second teeth come in, a need for orthodontic care or mouth cancer. By having regular check-ups as part of a preventative dentistry approach, you can help to identify dental issues early, minimising the treatment and cost.
Maintaining your smile
While oral health is the main goal of preventative dentistry, we also want our teeth to look their best. The two things tend to go hand in hand, and through regular dental checks and good habits you can help maintain your smile and keep your teeth looking, as well as being healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is preventative dentistry?
Much as it sounds, preventative dentistry is dental care that aims to maintain good oral health over the course of your lifetime, minimising the likelihood of any problems.
What is preventative dentistry for?
Your dental health has a direct impact on your overall health and wellbeing, and while there are excellent options for anyone who loses one or multiple teeth over the course of their lifetime, it’s always preferable to keep all your own teeth where possible. Preventative dentistry aims to keep your teeth healthy, and as a result, to help protect your overall wellbeing.
What is involved in preventative dentistry?
Preventative dentistry focuses on regular check-ups and healthy habits like brushing, flossing and nutrition to support dental health. By starting in childhood, we can help individuals to develop good habits that will last a lifetime. Preventative dentistry also means checking for any issues so that they can be caught and addressed early on (such as overcrowding), and regular hygienist appointments to prevent the build-up of plaque that could lead to cavities.
Is mouth preventative dentistry right for me?
Preventative dentistry is a good idea for everyone, no matter how old you are. The earlier you start, the better, which is why we recommend that children opt into our children’s dental care programme as soon as their first teeth come through.
Young children
The earlier you start with preventative dentistry, the better, which is why we recommend children are registered with a paediatric dentist (like Bethcar), as soon as they get their first tooth. That can be as young as four months old, but they should certainly visit a dentist before their first birthday.
Before developing serious dental issues
Even if you don’t start on a dental hygiene plan as a child, it’s still a good idea to opt in as soon as you can. If you can do so before any serious dental issues have occurred, then it’s got a much better chance of preventing issues from developing too quickly.
After developing serious dental issues
If you have already developed dental health issues, then it’s still worth registering with a dentist who practises preventative care. In doing so, you can monitor any issues to try to minimise the chances of them getting any worse, improve existing dental health, and identify any further issues before they become too serious.
