About Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a specialist area of dentistry dedicated to preventing, managing and improving the alignment of your teeth, helping them to grow straight and even for the best appearance, function and to ensure everyone smiles better. We typically associate orthodontics with braces, and that’s often a big part of the process, but there’s more to it, and many people benefit from orthodontic treatment as it’s quite common for teeth to be misaligned.
Treatment Benefits
Benefits Of Orthodontics
Often when we think about orthodontics, the main focus is on the appearance of your teeth, and certainly this is an important benefit of the process. However, orthodontics is also about keeping your long-term dental health in mind as well.
Benefits include:
Improved appearance
By straightening the teeth and reducing any gaps, orthodontics improves the appearance of your smile and can also help improve your confidence.
Improved function
Often orthodontics is used to correct the bite of the teeth, which is how they meet at the front and the back of the mouth. This can affect how you eat, speak and how comfortable your teeth are as well.
Long-term dental health
Aligning the teeth also makes teeth easier to clean and maintain, which in turn has a positive impact on helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease in the long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is where we look at the alignment of the teeth and jaw as they grow and develop and assess whether any intervention is needed. Typically, it involves a range of diagnostic, monitoring and treatment options, such as braces, retainers, and bands, to change the position of the teeth.
What is orthodontic treatment for?
Orthodontic treatment is partially about maximising the appearance of your teeth by making them straighter, closing gaps or aligning crooked or crowded teeth. However, it’s also about ensuring dental health. For example, overcrowding can cause problems with your bite, and improper alignment can affect speech.
What's involved with orthodontic treatment?
What your orthodontic treatment entails varies from person to person, depending on what you need. However, braces are a central part of the process.
We will assess your teeth and take x-rays from a number of different angles, possibly taking a mould of your teeth to truly understand what’s needed. We will then discuss the suggested process with you in a consultation.
Once we decide to move forward with a treatment plan, we will do any preparatory treatment. Then we will use the mould to create your braces. In your next appointment we will clean your teeth and fit the braces. This involves using dental cement to place brackets on the teeth and then applying a wire through the brackets to help guide the teeth into the right place.
Once your braces are fitted, we will advise you on proper dental care, and set a schedule for follow up appointments to monitor the progress of your teeth. As your teeth move into place the braces will need to be adjusted. The length of time that you keep your braces varies, but patients usually keep them for between one and two years.
Is orthodontic treatment right for me?
If you have overcrowded, crooked or misaligned teeth, then orthodontic treatment may be right for you. Orthodontic treatment can begin at any age and at Bethcar Dental we will discuss it as an option with any client who we think would benefit from it. We would not recommend it unless you have a good standard of oral hygiene, or unless it is necessary, but if you think it might be an option for you we are always happy to talk through your options and our recommendations.
