About Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are used to cap the top of a damaged tooth to restore its shape and appearance as well as protect the tooth from further damage. They can be applied to teeth and dental implants with different materials available depending on the needs of the individual.
Our experienced practitioners will work with you to decide what’s best for you, your dental health and overall wellbeing.
Treatment Benefits
Benefits Of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are usually used when a tooth has been damaged either through decay or an accident where a tooth has been cracked, broken or severely worn down. They are also sometimes used to reinforce a dental bridge. They offer a variety of benefits, ranging from restoring the appearance of the tooth to protecting it.
Benefits include:
Restoration of the tooth's appearance
Dental crowns are a good, permanent solution for damaged teeth, restoring the appearance of your smile and blending in with your remaining natural teeth. If you look after them, they can last up to 15 years or more.
Protecting weak or damaged teeth
In addition to restoring the appearance of a broken tooth, dental crowns also help to protect the remaining tooth from foot particles, bacteria and other irritants as well as further damage.
Reinforcing a bridge
Crowns can also be used as part of fitting a dental bridge. They are used to cap adjacent, healthy teeth and hold a dental bridge in place of a missing tooth.
Improving speech and ability to eat
Missing or damaged teeth can make it hard to eat, drink and speak properly. By fitting a permanent solution for a damaged tooth, a crown will act largely like your natural teeth, restoring regular functionality.
They are long-lasting with appropriate care
Crowns are a long-lasting solution for broken and damaged teeth, lasting up to 15 years or more before they need to be replaced. The longevity of the crown however depends on your regular dental hygiene, your overall health and wellbeing, and also assumes no other accidents/damage occurring.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's involved in getting a crown?
If you have a damaged tooth then your dentist at Bethcar Dental will discuss the options with you to decide what’s best for your particular needs. If a dental crown is the best solution, we will book two appointments for you. The first appointment is to prepare the area and take a mould of your tooth so we can custom create the crown. The second appointment will be to fit the crown. At both appointments we will numb the area with a local anaesthetic.
Appointment 1
To take a mould of your tooth we will first thoroughly clean the area to remove any plaque or bacteria. We will then shave down part of the tooth so that the crown will fit once it’s placed. Your dentist will then make an impression using a mould so that we can match the crown to the space and place a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made.
Appointment 2
Your second appointment is usually one to two weeks later. We will remove the temporary crown and fix the permanent one in place using dental cement. You will then be advised how long you should wait before resuming your usual eating and drinking (usually an hour or so), and how to care for your crown so that it lasts as long as possible and teeth remain healthy.
Is a dental crown right for me?
Dental crowns are suitable in a wide range of circumstances and for many people. However, your suitability for a dental crown may depend on a number of factors including the type of damage that has occurred to the tooth, your overall health and wellbeing and your general oral health.
Damage to a single tooth
Dental crowns usually work best when there is damage to a single tooth rather than multiple teeth. If you have multiple teeth that require intervention we will discuss the best options for you and your overall wellbeing.
Severe tooth damage
Sometimes the damage that is done to a tooth is too severe to attach a crown. If this is the case then we will discuss alternative options with you.
Children and dental crowns
Crowns are used for children if they are deemed to be helpful in protecting and restoring teeth that have suffered as a result of tooth decay or trauma. If your child has a damaged tooth, then our dentists will discuss the options with you to support their long-term wellbeing.
What are dental crowns for?
Dental crowns can be used either to restore the appearance of a broken or damaged tooth, or to support a weakened tooth structure as a result of an accident or tooth decay.
Fitting a dental crown is also a way to help protect and preserve the remaining part of a damaged tooth as well as those around it, reducing the risk of further damage.
Suitable for adults and children
The comfortable and minimally invasive nature of Airflow tooth polishing makes it suitable for children as well as adults.
Anyone concerned about stained teeth
We all get staining on our teeth over the course of the year, whether it’s in the hard to reach places behind our teeth or as a result of daily food and drink intake. This treatment is recommended for everyone, especially those predisposed to staining.
Anyone looking to maintain optimum oral health
Tooth polishing is recommended at least once a year as part of a healthy oral hygiene programme, helping to minimise the buildup of plaque and help prevent gum disease.
Nervous dental patients
A gentler approach to stain removal than traditional scale and polish treatments, Airflow tooth polishing is ideal for anyone who is anxious about visiting the dentist. It provides a positive experience and a high standard of preventative dental healthcare to minimise the likelihood of other dental interventions down the line.
Patients with sensitive teeth
Airflow is recommended by our dentists because it’s a gentle approach to polishing teeth. However, as pressure can also be adjusted and no instruments come into direct contact with the teeth, it’s also highly suitable for clients with sensitive teeth, minimising the chances of any discomfort.
Suitable for crowns, veneers, bridges or implants
As with sensitive teeth, Airflow tooth polishing is also suitable for anyone with crowns, veneers, bridges or implants due to the minimally invasive approach and adaptable pressure.
What is a traditional dental crown?
At Bethcar, we offer two different types of traditional crown. We offer porcelain bonded crowns with a metal base, and those without a metal base which use other materials such as E-max, resulting in a colour match closer to your natural teeth and generally preferred because of their more aesthetic appearance.
