About Composite Bonding
Designed to perfect the appearance of your natural teeth, composite bonding (also known as tooth bonding or dental bonding) addresses minor damage, gaps and imperfections in the teeth in order to make them appear uniform. Applied freehand, instead of pre-making prosthetics in a laboratory as we do with veneers, composite bonding is a bespoke approach to creating the perfect smile. We’re a privileged that patients travel from around the South Wales Gwent area, including Merthyr, Cwmbran and Abergavenny.
Treatment Benefits
Benefits Of Composite Bonding
Composite bonding is an extremely popular treatment for improving the appearance of your teeth.
Benefits include:
Improved smile
First and foremost, the benefit of composite bonding is that it’s a great way to improve the appearance of your teeth with minimal intervention and no alteration to the structure of your natural teeth. The result is the best version of your smile.
Improved confidence
Improving the appearance of your teeth can have a positive impact on your confidence and self-esteem, knowing that your smile is as sparkling as you want it to be, especially when it’s combined with general healthy dental hygiene practices.
Fast and safe
Applying composite bonding to your teeth is a comparatively fast way to improve the appearance of your teeth. For a single tooth, the process can take as little as 45-minutes with no downtime when it comes to eating and drinking normally. It’s also as safe as any treatment can be, without disrupting the structure of your teeth or including the use of any anaesthetic.
Comfortable Dentistry
As there is no drilling or tooth removal involved in composite bonding, there’s no need for an anaesthetic, which makes it a more appealing treatment for many patients.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is composite bonding?
Described as a form of adhesive dentistry, composite bonding is a state-of-the-art method for restoring teeth, either for aesthetic reasons or because part of the structure of the tooth has been damaged. A cosmetic treatment, is it where a resin material is attached to the tooth and shaped to improve or restore its appearance. The colour of the resin is matched to your teeth so that the end result is as natural as possible.
What is composite bonding for?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment designed to restore or improve the appearance of your teeth. That might be because they have become chipped, uneven in length or because there are natural gaps that you would like to fill.
What's involved with getting composite bonding?
Composite bonding is applied to the teeth manually rather than preparing moulds in a lab. As a result, we should be able to complete the procedure in one treatment, depending on the number of teeth you’re having repaired.
As there is no removal of the tooth or tooth material involved in composite bonding there’s no need for an anaesthetic. However, if you are a nervous patient we can talk to you about sedative options if necessary.
We start by selecting the right shade of composite material to match your teeth. We then prepare the surface of the tooth to attach the resin. Next, we apply the composite resin to the tooth and shape it as required. The material is hardened using an ultraviolet light, and finally we polish the tooth. For one tooth the process can take as little as 45-minutes.
What are the drawbacks of composite bonding?
The drawbacks of composite bonding are minimal and can largely be mitigated by good dental care practices and regular dentist appointments as part of a dental care plan.
Disadvantages may include:
Not as durable as veneers
While composite resin is a durable material, as you would expect for any dental application, it isn’t as hard wearing as the porcelain that’s used in veneers. This means that you should take care when playing impact sports and chew sensibly. With care, the bonding material can last up to about 10 years, but will need to be replaced at some point. This should be planned into your dental care.
Less stain resistant
The porcelain used for veneers is known for being highly stain resistant, whereas the composite bonding is less so. It will stain over time, but at a slower rate than your natural teeth. As with the general appearance of your teeth, it’s worth keeping this in mind when making dietary choices. That said, the staining process can be limited by good dental hygiene and regular dental appointments including scaling and polishing.
